Diaper bags are one of those parenting products that used to be fairly simple to choose. That was before brands started innovating ways to make them stylish, comfortable, and even more useful for parents every time they leave the house. To help you find the one that suits your needs, we tested nearly two dozen diaper bags in our lab and at home with our babies and toddlers.

Natasha Bhuyan, M.D., vice president of in-office care at One Medical, is both a physician and a new mom, so she’s recently done quite a bit of research on diaper bags. She tells Parents she was surprised by how much there was to learn about the topic. “Who knew something so seemingly straightforward could be so complicated!” Dr. Bhuyan says.

We understand, so we had testers assess these bags for comfort, capacity, design, organization, and ease of access—even for one-handed emergency diaper changes. We packed the bags full and tipped them over, to see if everything stayed organized or got all jumbled together. We also tested the bags' durability by looking at how they'd held up after six months of real-world use. The best diaper bag is the one that matches your style and lifestyle.

If you love machine-washable baby gear as much as we do, JuJuBe’s Zealous Backpack should be your go-to. In testing, we found it came out of the washing machine looking like new. Its compartments provide plenty of storage and the drink pockets accommodate large bottles. It has loops to secure rolled-up blankets or burp cloths, while zippered pockets offer built-in storage for phones, keys, or any other items you need to locate quickly.

The dedicated changing pad pocket doubles as a 15-inch laptop sleeve. This bag could benefit from more external storage compartments and a more intuitive design. Additionally, since it lacks carabiner straps to secure it to a stroller, this roomy bag may take up all the onboard stroller basket storage.

The Details:

This tote effectively combines spaciousness and organization. Our tester loved how its 23-liter capacity held everything she needed. Thanks to the five interior pockets and exterior side pouch, she could easily find what she was looking for without going on a fishing expedition. A front flap-closure pocket doubles as a laptop sleeve for devices up to 16 inches, while the insulated pockets are ideal for storing snacks or water bottles.

The bag has a cross-body strap so you can go hands-free if you prefer (which our tester often did), as well as a luggage strap that offers versatility beyond the diaper stage. If you dislike the tote bag style, Calpak has a backpack with tons of compartments that Parents staffers love.

Our tester wished this bag was machine-washable. Also, for the price, not including a changing pad seems like a big oversight for a diaper bag.

The Details:

This backpack performed well in real-world scenarios, with our tester raving about the 17-liter capacity. The bag made a perfect weekender bag for their toddler, and our tester especially appreciated the various dedicated storage compartments that made this backpack work for multiple caregivers.

The bag features several handy features and accessories, such as a changing pad, a small removable cross-body bag, a trolley sleeve for slipping onto suitcase handles, an interior technology sleeve for laptops or tablets, and shoulder straps that convert to stroller straps. We love its sleek, modern design and water-repellant fabric.

Our tester felt the capacity was compromised by the pockets. Specifically, “when filling all the internal pockets, you lose storage space in the main zippered compartment.” Also, this is one of the more expensive diaper bags on our list.

The Details:

Leave it to Nike to create a functional bag that brings order to chaos. Our tester specifically loved this bag because it worked for both her and her husband. It has tons of internal storage and pockets and comes in two neutral hues. The slim design made it easy to fit in stroller storage baskets, and nylon loops on the exterior allow you to clip it to stroller handlebars with a carabiner.

A padded external tech pocket provides quick access to your laptop or tablet, and the removable insulated pouch is perfect for bottles and snacks. Top handles allow you to use the backpack as a tote if you prefer. Although it isn’t machine washable, we found that the bag’s interior was easy to wipe clean.

This backpack lacks a changing pad.

The Details:

Dagne Dover makes iconic, parent-beloved diaper bags thanks to their intuitive design and awesome accessories. This tote bag with carry straps includes a detachable crossbody strap, two stroller clips, an insulated bottle holder, a zip-up pouch, a washable bag, and a wipe-clean changing mat. It features both luggage and laptop sleeves.

Our tester—a self-described backpack fan—enjoyed using the Wade tote since it had so many dedicated internal compartments that made it easy to locate essentials quickly. In particular, our tester appreciated that the somewhat stretchy neoprene offers extra ease if you need to squeeze additional items into the bag. She also felt the fabric was stain-resistant and durable.

If you completely fill all the pockets, be prepared to fight with the main zipper to close the bag. Also, at $215, this is one of the most expensive bags we tested.

The Details:

This pick packs a lot of organizational features in a small package. Our tester appreciated that it was compact, yet offered plenty of interior and exterior storage solutions, making it a strong contender to replace her regular diaper bag. It boasts seven external pockets, including two insulated external side pockets for bottles, a parent pocket for essentials, eight internal pockets, a key leash (which can also double as a pacifier holder), and metal feet on the bottom to keep it from getting dirty.

This vegan leather backpack is available in four neutral hues, has laptop and luggage sleeves, and comes with a machine-washable changing pad and stroller straps. It’s another multifunctional bag that can last long after the diaper stage.

While our tester felt it was too expensive for its size.

The Details:

This Bugaboo Changing Backpack earned high marks from testers, thanks to its comfortable straps and large capacity (it can even fit a 17-inch laptop). The high capacity meant that we weren’t forced to make tough calls about what to take and what to leave behind. We also love the unique minimalist design, smartly placed internal pockets, two Velcro straps that attach to stroller handlebars, and included changing pad.

Our tester raved about how comfortable the bag was and how well it distributed weight. She called the front zipper—which transforms this bag into a changing station—a “game changer.” When completely open, everything remains secure thanks to a mesh material that keeps items in place. The water-repellent material is made of 100% recycled plastic.

It might be outside of some people’s budgets.

The Details:

The Caraa is built with traveling in mind, with a puffy exterior and convertible straps that transform this backpack into a tote. There’s a luggage strap and stroller hooks for added convenience, while the recycled nylon exterior is water-repellant for easy cleanup. Of the diaper bags we tested, it earned high marks for durability even with sustained use.

The long zipper pulls are a standout feature we didn’t see in the other diaper bags we tested. There are plenty of pockets and storage compartments, including a separate pull-out diaper caddy, tech sleeve, insulated pockets for milk or food, and toy hooks outside the bag to keep everything well organized.

This is a very expensive bag and it lacks a changing pad. Plus, the backpack straps were difficult to adjust.

The Details:

This backpack features a fold-out changing pad and four bottle pockets (two external, two internal). The water-resistant vegan leather exterior and trolly sleeve for luggage handles make this a durable option that would work well for travel. The standup design also ensures that the bag doesn’t collapse on itself. The laptop sleeve can accommodate a 17-inch laptop.

Our tester appreciated that items didn’t slip out of the pockets, which were deep enough to hold items securely. Roomy exterior pockets located in the front and back make it easy to access diapers, bottles, and more. This bag has a deceptively large capacity without feeling bulky. I think you could fit everything you need for one baby—diapers, bottles, the changing mat, a change of clothes, toys, etc—into the interior.

“After six months, this bag still looks brand new. I've thrown it around in the back of the car and put it on the ground many times and it still doesn't have any scuff marks.” —Janice

The internal pockets lack zippers, and our tester found the external zippers were hard to use one-handed. Also, even though the design includes D rings, this bag doesn’t come with stroller straps.

The Details:

Machine washability is one of the standout features of the JuJuBe Be Right Back Backpack. Our tester said it has held up well even after several runs through the washing machine and dryer during the six months she’s used it. This backpack has 17 pockets, including two side bottle pockets and a large back section dedicated to the included memory foam changing pad.

Front exterior zip pockets are designed to house caregiver essentials, with soft microfiber lining to protect essentials like smartphones. Our tester enjoyed how lightweight this bag felt and how the padded straps made it comfortable to wear even when fully packed. Available in a variety of colors, its lay-flat front zip is TSA-friendly.

One tester wished the changing pad was bigger and that the bag came with feet to protect the bottom from dirt transfer.

The Details:

Spacious is the best way to describe this Béis diaper bag. Our tester said it had such a large capacity that it doubled as their family’s go-to weekend bag. Although our tester only had one child (though with another on the way), they felt the capacity of this bag could accommodate gear for two kids.

Organization is easy thanks to the many interior compartments with labels. Additionally, there are exterior pockets for bottles, stroller straps, a luggage pouch, and a dedicated pocket for the changing pad that can double as a laptop compartment.

In this instance, a high capacity means a heavier bag: it weighs four pounds when empty, making it a chore to carry when full. Our testers relied mainly on the stroller straps or stroller storage basket to transport it because it was too heavy to carry on their shoulder for extended periods.

The Details:

At 12.5 by 16 by 7.25 inches, this diaper bag is roomy enough to hold everything you need for two kids. But there’ll be no fishing expeditions here: its thoughtful design features, like the built-in changing pad, pacifier and teether holders, and covered wipe dispenser pocket, make this a well-organized and intuitive, easy-to-use pick.

The removable fanny pack gives you the option to travel light and keep only the most essential items to hand. Other useful features include a luggage sleeve, stroller straps, and a magnetic top closure that offers quick one-handed access to key items.

The changing pad isn’t removable. Also, this is a heavier backpack at 3.3 pounds when empty.

The Details:

If you’re looking for a straightforward messenger bag, this pick is convenient because of the large open side pocket. This allows you to simply reach in and grab what you need while holding a baby on the other hip. There are also 10 interior pockets, including an insulated bottle pocket. It features tote handles and a removable cross-body strap, as well as a stroller hook.

We didn’t test this bag ourselves, but it comes highly recommended by parents, who particularly like that you can choose between the small bag size, great for quick outings, and the medium, which is more suited for overnight or traveling. It comes in multiple neutral color options.

The insulated pocket can only hold one bottle.

The Details:

This editor-favorite clutch is cute and compact. It unfolds to reveal a zip-off changing pad, a large mesh pocket that holds up to four diapers, and a translucent wipes case so you know when it’s time to refill. A zippered outer pocket can house caregiver essentials like keys, wallet, and phone. With the attached strap, you can hang it from your wrist or a stroller.

It’s perfect for those times when we want to leave the diaper bag at home or when space is at a premium. We love that it works on its own for diaper-changing on the go, or can be tucked into a larger bag. And the pretty designs are modern and don’t scream “baby gear.”

This is truly for quick changes and fast trips since you can only fit about four large diapers in it.

The Details:

This fanny pack has everything you need to keep your baby fresh and clean on the go. It has a larger capacity than a clutch and can hold diapers, wipes, a small spare outfit, and other essentials like diaper rash cream. Plus, there’s a wipe-dispensing pocket and a changing pad.

This can also be worn like a traditional fanny pack or as a crossbody bag. And while we didn’t test this option ourselves, reviewers on the Béis site note that it’s the perfect bag to take grocery shopping, through the airport, or on quick errands.

This is smaller than a typical diaper bag. Carrying a child and wearing this at the same time might not be that comfortable.

The Details:

A simple crossbody sling makes it easy to carry a child and a diaper bag simultaneously. While incredibly lightweight, it’s still spacious with a zip-close main compartment, an insulated zippered front pocket, and a lined pocket on the back to easily access your phone or keys.

We didn’t test this sling for ourselves, but other parents note that it will fit around three diapers, wipes, a onesie, and a burp cloth.

The compact size means you don’t get any extra accessories like a changing mat.

To find the best diaper bags, we tested nearly two dozen options in our lab and at home in the real world with real babies and toddlers. We asked our testers to consider the following criteria:

To guide our process, we also spoke with several experts for insight into what to look for in a diaper bag, what to pack in it, and how to use it safely, especially immediately postpartum:

Dr. Bhuyan favors backpacks over messenger bags or totes. "It’s better to have the weight distributed evenly across your body rather than just one side," she explains. "[It’s] ultimately better for your posture and spine." Parents who have recently given birth should avoid carrying heavy bags or using bags with straps around the abdomen. “Store heavier objects in the center and lighter objects in the sides to keep the bulk of the weight centered,” she suggests.

When using a diaper bag with a stroller, Dr. Bhuyan recommends stowing the bag in the stroller’s storage basket. Clipping or hanging it on the back of the stroller is actually a safety risk. "The diaper bag could cause the stroller to tip over since most stroller handlebars were not designed for hanging objects,” she explains. Be sure all straps or cords are fully tucked into the stroller basket so you don't trip on them and so children aren't tempted to grab at them. Small items that pose a choking hazard, as well as creams and medications, should be securely zipped in and out of reach of children.

“Many items that are not intended for babies to ingest can pose a risk, such as sunscreen, hand sanitizer, or even wipes,” Dr. Bhuyan points out. “This is why it’s best to ensure all items, especially small items, are securely placed into the bag.” She offers the following safety tips:

You don’t always need a large diaper bag. Depending on your baby’s age and feeding needs, you could definitely get away with leaving the house with just the basics of a spare outfit and diaper-changing supplies. But when it comes to babies, it’s always best to be prepared.

“Any material that's easy to wipe clean,” recommends Ludwig. Some of her favorites are vegan leather, nylon, and even polyester for their ease of cleaning over time, while Dr. Bhuyan recommends cotton and microfiber. And don’t forget to check that the inside of the diaper bag is easy-clean fabric as well, because spills and accidents will happen in the diaper bag too.

Ludwig points out that as your little one grows, your diaper bag needs will change, but she sticks to a basic three-category rule: something to eat (formula, breastmilk, or snacks), something to play with (toys, teethers, or loveys), and something to change into and clean up with—for both you and baby! Miller also recommends keeping a list of your child’s allergies, medications, or special needs in a diaper bag to provide to emergency personnel if needed.
